They are already defining their generation!

I read this over the shoulder of my daughter, who was looking at a friend's My Space page (and no, she still doesn't have one.) LOL.

Remember when beepers was the thing to have : )
If you are under the age of 13...you should not read this and if you
do, you should not repost this.
Just because you were born in '97 doesn't mean you're a 90's kid. It's not
like you could remember the original Simpsons.
I am sorry but three conscious years of the 90's just wont cut it.

You're a 90's kid if: You can finish this [ice ice _ _ _ _ ]
You remember watching: -Doug -Ren & Stimpy
-Pinky and the Brain
-AAAAAAAH Real Monsters!
-Rockos modern Life.

You've ever ended a sentence with the word "PSYCHE!"
You just cant resist finishing this . . . "Iiiiiiin west philidelphia
born and raised . . ."

You remember:
-TGIF
-Step by Step
-Family Matters
-Dinosaurs
-Boy Meets World.

You remember when it was actually worth getting up early on a
Saturday to watch cartoons. You got super excited when it was Oregon Trail day
in computer class at school.

You remember reading "Goosebumps" You took plastic cartoon lunch
boxes to school. You still get the urge to say "NOT" after (almost) every
sentence . . . not

when everyhting was settled by:
-rock paper scissors or
-bubble gum bubble gum in a dish or
-daddy had a donkey inky binky bonky.

when cops and robbers was a daily activity. when we played Hide and go seek
until our legs grew numb.

when we used to obey our parents You used to listen to the radio all day
long just to record your FAVORITE song of ALL time.
"Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" was both a game and a TV game
show.
Captain Planet. He's a Hero. You knew that Kimberly, the pink ranger, and
Tommy, the green ranger, were meant to be together. ???

You remember when Super Nintendos and Sega Genisis became popular.
You always wanted to send in a tape to America's Funniest Home Videos . . . but
never taped anything funny. You remember watching Home Alone 1, 2 , and 3 . . .
and tried to pull the pranks on "intruders"

You remember watching:
-The Magic School Bus
-Wishbone
-Reading Rainbow on PBS.

You remember when Yo-Yos were cool. You remember those Where's Waldo books.
You remember eating Warheads.

You remember watching:
-the 1st Batman
-Aladdin
-Ninja Turtles
-3 Ninjas movies.

You remember Ring Pops. You remember drinking Surge, and Tang. If you
remember when every thing was "da BOMB!" When they made the new lunchables so
that you could make pizza AND tacos. You remember boom boxes vs. cd players.
Making those little paper fortune cookie things, and then predicting your life
with them.

You played and/or collected "Pogs" :) You had at least one
Tamagotchi, GigaPet, or Nano and brought it everywhere. . . . Furbies. You
haven't always had a computer, and it was cool to have the internet. And Windows
95 was the best. You watched the original cartoons of Rugrats, Power Rangers,
and Ninja Turtles. Michael Jordan was a king. YIKES pencils and erasers were the
stuff!

All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand. You remember when
the new Beanie Babies and Talking Elmo were always sold out
You collected those Beanie Babies.
Carebears Gak was the coolest stuff invented. Lambchop's song never
ended. The old dollar bills. Silver dollars, which were cool to have. You
remember a time before the WB. You collected all the Troll dolls

If you even know what an original walkman is. You remember wanting to sit
on the orange Nickelodeon couch. You've gotten creeped out by "Are You Afraid of
the Dark?" You know the Macarena by heart.

"Talk to the hand" . . . enough said You always said, "Then why don't you
marry it!" You went to McDonald's to play in the playplace. You remember playing
on merry go rounds at the playground.

Before the MySpace frenzy . . . Before the Internet & text
messaging . . . Before Sidekicks & iPods . . . Before MIKE JONES . . .
Before PlayStation2 or X-BOX . . . Before Spongebob . . . Back when you put off
the 5 hours of homework you had every night. When light up sneakers were
cool.

When you rented VHS tapes, not DVDs. When gas was $0.95 a gallon
& Caller ID was a new thing. When we recorded stuff on VCRs. When we called
the radio station to request songs to hear off of our walkman. When checking out
drawing books and that one book about the rainbow fish from the library was THE
cool thing to do. You had slap braclets! We had the cool no tye shoe strings
that curled you could get them in every color . . . . Way back. Before we
realized all this would eventually disappear.

Who would have thought you'd miss the 90's so much!!!!! Post this in your
bulletin if you remember these days . . . .

Anyway, that's what this generation looks back on with nostalgia.

The Feud is Over, For Now

J. hasn't spoke to her best friend all week. They were first feuding about a sleepover, and then other things.

J. wouldn't tell me what. But toward the end, they started texting each other, and then finally, today talking (good thing too, since they had a project to complete).

Sometimes, I think even BFs need to take a time out from each other. Clears out the carbon.

Cell phones, when should your kids get 'em

There was an interesting post today at my old tromping grounds, The News Tribune, about when kids should get cell phones. The article seemed to conclude this event should probably happen around 6th or seventh grade.

Okay, for some odd reason, they aren't posting the article online...dummies, but here is the same article from the Associated Press in a Pittsburgh paper.

We gave J. a phone in 6th grade, just before her 13th b-day because a. she was going to her first public school b. it was in a rough neighborhood and c. she had to walk to a friend's house after school.

Soo, we've been at this for three years, and so far, so good. (she's IMing her friends and texting more than actually using the phone.)

One suggestion I'd make to parents...draw up a contract, and get unlimited texting.

Valentines Day, Cards and Some Cruelty

V-day was pretty typical for J, lots of candy swapped with girlfriends. I did manage to talk her out of sending a fake valentine to this one boy...as a joke.

I explained to her that everyone would laughing except this kid, and after some thought she decided to call it off.

Meanwhile, her friends were sending V-day texts back and forth like this:

Cost of limo: $100
Cost of dinner and drinks $200
Cost of hotel room: $250
Look on his face when you tell him you're having your period: Priceless.

I don't even want to ask.

In Defense of Hilary, by a Man

I don't think it's tripped J. radar yet about the whole blue dress, Monica thing with Hilary. I really don't think she cares.

But here is a nice essay, by a man I'm ashamed to say, about Hilary's decision to stick by Bill.

Build a Bear, You've Got to be Kidding Me

That, without preamble, is what my daughter said to me when she called me at work yesterday.

I'd forgotten that at the prodding of my PTA pres, I'd paid for and signed J. up for a Build-a-Bear like stuffed animal making event at her school. She was the only 8th grader there, along with the PTA pres' son. She was not happy with me.

I think in response, she created a white tiger dressed in, I guess, a skirt and fringed bikini top. But she insists it's a guy tiger, and a transsexual one at that. Okay, payback. No more Build-a-Bear for you.

Mom, those people next to us are mean

This is what J. whispered in my ear as we attended our caucus meeting today at Kent Elementary.

The parking lot was packed. We ended up in the old baseball field in back. The gym was filed with at least 600 people jammed around tables according to the precinct they belonged to. We finally found ours, and the 18 of us (most from one street over from where we live), tried to figure out what next.

It was obvious that Obama was going to carry this. Of the 18, only 4 were for Hilary and one man remained firmly undecided.

I ended up speaking for Hilary, and yes ended up as a delegate for the next step up on March 11. While we figured out who had to declare what and use a table to figure out how many delegates Obama vs. Hilary had, J. went browsing around the tables, to see how the rest were doing.

That's when she came back with the news we were a pretty mellow group. (Well, after all this is over, we still attend parties together, watch each other's house, return a dog that has gotten out of a fence.)

Then there was the group right behind us. Apparently the Obamaites wanted the Clintonites gone, and pretty much ordered them out of the building. Okay. Really wouldn't want to be at the next night out against crime street party with this group.

This election is even catching my daughter's interest

Surprisingly.

We were on our way to school this am, when the radio barked out that Hilary (I guess Bill took a pass) was arriving in Seattle at 8 pm tonight.

"Oh, I wish we could go to that," she said, while texting a friend she's going to see in 5 minutes at school.

Logistics say this isn't going to happen unless I left work, like now. First, it takes 45 minutes to get to Auburn, then would prob. take another 45 min. to an hour to get into Seattle. Never mind finding parking in the maw of cars that's guaranteed to be around the piers tonight. So sorry, Hilary, we're likely to vote for you, but no, we're not willing to sit in traffic for you.

J. then noted that Obama was arriving tomorrow.

About 2/3 of our class (meaning her home room class of 35 kids) are voting for him, she informed me.

And the other third?

Hilary, she said dismissively. And yes, she's part of that third.

"Oh, and Sean said he was voting for Huckabee (he's still in the race?)," J. said. "We all booed him."

I'm going to drive fast when I'm old...

This is what J. said to me as we followed someone down our hill today, at say, 15 mph.

Turned out to be a senior citizen, tho J. thinks anyone over 25 is old, in her book.

I can actually see her in a red sports car, hair flying in the wind at 50, with a Rottie (her fav. breed) filling in the seat next to her.

She made the cut!

But as she called me, her voice began to break, and she started to cry.

Okay, clue me in here, I thought this was good news (getting on the team, that is.). Did your BF make it (thinking that was maybe the reason for the tears.) Yes, and she did and no it wasn't.

Apparently, it was just the stress of waiting (she told me casually last night that anyone that didn't get on the team was going to get to be a manager, and she was fine with that. I really didn't believe her.)

And after these tears, I don't think she would have been fine with that.
